About the Workshop
It’s rough out there. Emerging artists find themselves struggling to make ends meet in the present - never mind planning for the future. Family, friends, and communities can be a great source of support, but nourishing these bonds takes time and effort, two things that can often be in short supply when work demands so much.
How can emerging artists break through the stress of scarcity to think beyond survival? What are some practical steps towards imagining and realizing a fulfilling – and even abundant – future, both personally and artistically?
Visual artist / curator Kakim Goh and musician Nantali Indongo each have extensive professional experience in the arts, as well as other sectors including broadcasting and community education (Nantali) and public / private sector project management (Kakim). They have each found their own way of balancing artistic work with parallel pursuits, while building community and advancing social causes. Kakim and Nantali will draw on their experiences to offer concrete advice on dealing with the challenges of making a living while developing an artistic career.
What are Career Labs?
ELAN’s Career Labs series places emerging artists directly in conversation with artists who have established careers with Montreal as a home base. Each Lab will encourage open, honest, and practical discussions about the tough stuff that working artists face: dealing with money (or lack thereof), talking about your work, maintaining balance, learning from failure, building support networks, standing up for yourself, and more.
Part workshop, part artist talk, part round table, Career Labs equip you with recommendations, tips, insights, and actions to help you carve out your path as a working artist in Montreal.
All Career Labs are free, although spaces are limited and priority is given to emerging artists. Registration is limited to two Career Labs per participant.
ELAN`s Career Labs is made possible with the support of the Conseil des arts de Montréal.
